    1. Tough book to review. I like and respect Jeffrey Bell, but his book does not address what his title/subtitle seem to suggest it might address. The first third of the book is a defense of George W. Bush's social conservative bona fides. Then we get a long look at the history of European philosophy in view of the enlightenment and the gradual loss of Christian underpinnings across the continent. Then the last section purports to address the "future of social conservatism," but is more like random [...]

    2. An insightful, but desultory book. That's why I gave it two stars. Bell's insights on the foundations, history, mission, and agenda for social conservatism is a helpful guide for gaining understanding the agenda of the Left and what's at stake if we fail to effectively counter the "vision of the anointed" in the phrase of Thomas Sowell.

    3. I think has some excellent insight on what social conservatism truly is. The historical aspect of this book in defining the origins of such an idea is quite clear.
