    1. Actual Rating: 2.5 StarsThe premise of this book was intriguing and interesting with the concept of tracing back family roots only to discover some disturbing secrets that could change one’s life dramatically. Unfortunately, the execution of the novel itself left much to be desired and I was disappointed. I slogged through it to the end because I’m very stubborn about finishing books and I kept hoping it would get better. My curiousity was piqued and I wanted to see what Fiona’s research w [...]

    2. Kindle. This was a fast read. I liked the genealogy approach, though there wasn't anything new in techniques for me. The writing moved along and kept my interest. There were a few twists, but I was disappointed in the ending. Some loose pieces were never tied up. Some clues in the beginning didn't match the final reveal. I would have given more points if the ending had not been a let-down. Still, it's a good book to pass the time.

    3. DifferentThis bk kept me up far too long! I have done family research for yeas, so the subject was interesting to me. I' ll admit that i would not have gotten his book had i known it was written in england. I spent too much time figuring out what was a bonnet on a car, was a bisquit cokie ?? I read for pleasue , slows me down.

    4. Read this questing for some more genealogy - based stories. This is a mystery, but for my taste it was too predictable, almost like the author was told "You have 250 pages to tell your story with complete resolution and have all the good people live happily ever after." And it would scare anyone interested in exploring family history to death.

    5. Dark family secrets including murder come to light in this geneology mystery. A surprise gift for her adopted twin daughter's reveals an unexpected twist regarding their parentage. The characters don't have a lot of depth and the writer's style is almost too elementary. It also made the research piece look way too simple.

    6. Don't do it.but read the bookWho would ever think that doing a family history could bring up such suspense. Family Shadows shows what surprises can occur from doing a simple family history. All I can say is, if you have a sketchy past, be sure no one ever decides to do a history of your family.

    7. StiltedWhile the premise behind this book was fascinating the writing was stilted & the characters' responses & behaviors just plain weird. Really, your father isn't your father & he may have murdered your mother, who isn't the woman you thought & the only description of your reaction is to be described as resilient?!? It could have been so much better.

    8. DisappointedAfter having read the other novels by this author, it was disappointing to have to struggle through this one. Oddly, since I mistakenly read them out of order, this one may in fact have been the first. If so Mr. Nixon's abilities improved greatly in subsequent books.

    9. Who knows what secrets and lies you'll discover when you set about tracing your family tree? My advice after reading this book - don't do it! The plot thickens as this story develops, keeping the reader gripped and waiting to see what will be unearthed next.

    10. As someone who has done a fair amount of genealogy, I found the first quarter of the book tedious and it was heading for 2*However, the second half of the book was significantly better and I'm looking forward to reading the next book by this author

    11. Family shadows was a great read. Very complex story but true to what you can uncover in a genealogy quest.Family shadows was a great read. Very complex story but true to what you can uncover in a genealogy quest.

    12. Fairly good plot and paceybut the writing was a little clumsy and naive at times. The genealogical references were quite interesting but overall there were a few rather far-fetched twists in the plot that rather spoiled the essential realism of the suburban characters.

    13. If you're into genealogy and tracing your family tree this is an interesting book and an easy read. I was pleased to find that the character's stories continue in The Cuckoo Clock and Stolen Futures and hope there are more to come!

    14. I nearly gave up reading early on as the writing was very amateurish and clumsy and the story drawn out but I was intrigued as to where the plot was going so I persevered.

    15. Fascinating read I was kept intrigued throughout the entire book and it managed to have a good ending for the characters. Don't you just love strong women
